Scam Alert to Texas Employers

TWC Issues Scam Alert to all Texas Employers:

The Texas Workforce Commission wants all Texas employers to be aware of e-mail or other fraudulent schemes designed to obtain information illegally. If you receive an e-mail that claims to be from the New York Division of Unemployment Assistance, "@detma.org," DO NOT reply to the message or open the link in the message. This is an identity theft scam. The Texas Workforce Commission Unemployment Insurance & Regulation Division does not request information on behalf of other states, nor do we request confidential information in this manner. The New York State Department of Labor did not send the e-mail.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reports that this fraudulent e-mail is being sent to employers to obtain Personally Identifiable Information (PII) about their former employees. The scam appears to have originated in Massachusetts, and has been distributed to employers in New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

DOL’s Internal Control is investigating the issue.

If the e-mail looks like the image below, do not open or respond to it. If you believe your identity has been compromised, please contact local law enforcement and take steps to protect your identity and that of your employees.
