Several educational events scheduled for National Fair Housing Month in April

AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has partnered with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) to present a webinar series and will also host other educational events in April to honor National Fair Housing Month. TWC reminds all Texans that the Federal Fair Housing Act and Texas Fair Housing Act ensure that all individuals have equal access to housing.

These laws prohibit discrimination in housing based on disability, race, color, religion, national origin, sex and familial status. TWC, through its Civil Rights Division, enforces fair housing laws, and has resolved more than 675 cases involving allegations of housing discrimination in fiscal year 2016.

TWC and the TDHCA are hosting a Fair Housing webinar series beginning on April 4 at 1:30 p.m. Participants will learn the basics about fair housing in Texas; how to apply information in a review of potential scenarios; the basics about the reasonable accommodation process; and fair housing considerations for tenant selection criteria. On April 11 at 1:30 p.m., participants will learn the basics about the reasonable accommodation process, which will include information on approved service and assistance animals. Registration for the first webinar is now open on TDHCA’s website. Other Fair Housing Month events include:

  • The City of Garland Fair Housing Luncheon with TWC Civil Rights Division Director Lowell Keig as the guest speaker. The event will be held on Tuesday, April 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Atrium located at 300 N. Fifth St. in Garland. RSVP to the luncheon by calling 972-205-3300.
  • On April 22, the City of Garland will present two workshops and provide information on tenants’ and homebuyer’s rights and responsibilities. The workshops will be held at the City of Garland Unified Learning Center. For more information about the City of Garland events, contact Deborah Garza at 972-205-3395.

TWC urges all Texans to work together for fair housing. Learn more information about your rights as a consumer or your responsibilities as a housing provider on the civil rights discrimination website.
